Everyone says the old Italian joints are dying. They're not wrong. But three new spots are keeping the soul alive — here's where to find them.
Leichhardt's been written off so many times. "Norton Street's dead." "It's all gone downhill." "Just go to Haberfield instead."
And sure, if you're looking for the Leichhardt of 20 years ago, it's gone. But something else is emerging — something that honors what came before without being trapped by it.
The Old Guard (Still Worth It)
Let's acknowledge what's still good. Bar Italia — the gelato remains excellent, the coffee strong, and the outdoor seating on Norton still hits on a Sunday afternoon.
Pioneer Tavern — it's been there forever for a reason. Not fancy, not trying to be. Just a solid local that does the basics well.
The New Wave
1. The Pasta Place on Marion Street
Small, maybe 20 seats, making pasta fresh daily. The carbonara is actual carbonara — no cream, just eggs and guanciale and pecorino doing their thing. $24, which feels reasonable for what you get.
2. The Wine Bar Behind the Bookshop
Yes, there's a wine bar behind a bookshop now. Natural wines, small plates, the kind of place that shouldn't work in Leichhardt but absolutely does. Go on a Wednesday when it's quiet.
3. The One That's Been There Two Years But Feels New
Family-run, wood-fired pizzas that aren't trying to be Neapolitan — they're just good Australian-Italian comfort food. Kids running around, nonna in the kitchen, the whole thing.
The Verdict
Leichhardt's not dead. It's changing, and change is uncomfortable. But if you know where to look, it's still one of the most interesting food strips in the Inner West.
